Welcome to The Barber Collective

Here all are welcome. Hair is gender-less and a form of self-expression. This is a space to gather, tell your story(ies), feel comfortable, and disconnect. TBC is about more than a haircut: it is about the craft and the ability to share it with everyone who walks through the door.

We can’t wait to see you in the new space. Lets get your head right.

OUR HERSTORY

FROM NOTHING, SOMETHING

What does every dapper person in every city have in common? They Google “a good barbershop” before moving there. Finding a good barbershop is SO much more than “how do their cuts look?” Have you ever walked into a barbershop and/or salon and something felt off?  Maybe it was the decor. Maybe the music. Maybe it was the smell. Maybe it was the 20 eyes of judgement as you walk through the door.

Owner Georgette Watje is that 40-something, lesbian barber who opened her first shop in her garage during a Quarantine. How the hell did she get here? Born in Western MD, Georgette became an adult in Baltimore. She found her love for the outdoors in Colorado. Now in Tacoma, she has the best of all of those previous worlds combined. And she Googled “a good barbershop” before moving to each one.

The Barber Collective is a space where the focus is you and your hair. What do you want your hair to say about you? Georgette wants to help you tell that story. Does she want you to leave feeling dapper AF and eager to tag TBC in a selfie? Of course. But more than anything, Georgette wants you walking out the door feeling great and eager to pass the love forward.

The Grit City of Destiny — lets get your head right.

Our Services

3 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, But We’re OLD SOULS

Hair Cut

How short/long you like your sides? How short/long you like the top? From there we can talk details:

Fade (gradient in length from top to bottom), Taper (a gradual blend at the sideburn and back of the neck), Neckline (Tapered, blocked, rounded) Texture (added after the top has been cut usually for volume or a messy look) Buzz Cut (same length all over using clippers).

In the barber game showing is better than telling. Bring Georgette a pic of what you’d like your hair to look like.  Hair texture, density, and porosity varies from person to person.

Beard Trim

Our personal favorite; you won’t be disappointed.  The word Barber comes from the word “Barba”, meaning beard.

If your barber doesn’t do beards, are they really a barber? When you face the mirror, what shape do you like at the bottom of your beard? Do you like rounded, squared, or pointed?  Do you like the sideburn blended into the beard?  Maybe you want your beard disconnected from your sideburns.  How clean do you like your cheek line? Do you like all of the outlying beard hair cleaned up or do you like a more natural looking cheek line?

After a beard trim, you’ll receive a beard balm, oil, and/or salve treatment to keep it looking and feeling fresh long after you leave the chair.

Shaves

This is the ultimate “feel good” item on the menu.  Lay back and allow TBC to bring your entire face back to life.

A hot towel soaked in essential oil will be applied to the face to open up the pores.  Hot shaving lather will then be applied to moisturize and clean the facial follicles. Hot towel number two.  More hot lather and let the fun begin.  Using a Feather brand straight razor, the hair will seem to melt off.  Hot towel number three is applied.  Then using a cooling shave gel, I will go over any areas that are a little stubborn and need some extra attention.  Hot towel number 4.

Depending upon the sensitivity of the skin I will use Willow Tea, witch hazel, or Bay Rum as a skin coolant/ anti-inflammatory. Cold towel to close up the pores and relieve the skin.  A dab of cucumber oil will help moisturize the skin and is applied while enjoying a facial massage to end the treatment.

We’re not trying to be too cool but sadly there are only 2 chairs in the shop, and for the moment only 1 barber. With COVID-19 restrictions in effect we have to follow some pretty strict rules.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

WE FEELIN’ THE LOVE

“I’ve been going to G for a while now and couldn’t have been more happy that she opened her own spot. G’s skills with the scissors are equally matched with the cool vibe of her shop and her ease of making conversation. Supporting G as a local business owner goes further than just getting a great cut. She is an inspiration to me for being an ally to some many in the community, she not only speaks it but lives it as well. If you haven’t gotten a dope cut from G, I couldn’t recommend it more.”

Alexander Rera

“Love getting my haircut by Georgette. Always delivers a dapper classic cut that gets me a lot of compliments. A blend of old school with a stylish twist. Good conversation too. The new shop has a great feel with lots of vintage character. Thanks Georgette”

I don’t even know where to start. I guess at the I don’t even know where to start. I guess at the beginning. The original piece of art was an 1880 political cartoon by Thomas Nast. A skeleton bearing a banner saying ‘communist’ and a burning torch representing ‘anarchy’ bears a scroll with a message about California politics. Only, on the amended image, the scroll bears the legend ‘Be Gay Do Crime’. Fast forward to a Tweet from 2018 where a passer by saw spray paint on a wall that read “Be Gay, Do Crime.” The tweet took off and the rest is beautiful, gay history. TheAnarchistLibrary.org is a good place to start in the history of this revolution.
I’ve been stewing on what I want Pride gear to look like. How can I incorporate my Barber business into such a powerful movement? Here we have it. This wouldn’t have come to fruition without the creative and talented brain of @i_eat_pandas . I threw an idea with a couple of descriptors and boom, she blew me away. This piece of art is a reminder to never stop be unapologetically Queer. Never stop looking out for one another. And always make sure to give yourself grace and a self care day, aka Stay Dapper.
A shop link will be posted soon. Maybe in the comments tell us what you’d like to see it on.
Riots and Rainbows forever.

Um, we got a MERCH SHOP for the shop, y’all!

June 29, 2022

I don’t even know where to start. I guess at the beginning. A good friend and I were discussing a popular meme that pops up every so often, especially around Pride. The original piece of art was an 1880 political cartoon by Thomas Nast. A skeleton bearing a banner saying ‘communist’ and a burning torch…

Bold Together with OL Reign

June 6, 2022

If someone would’ve told me, way back in 2017, that I would be cutting the hair of two Queer soccer players in my unfinished garage, I would’ve laughed in your face. It all started when Kyllian Perrin came in for a haircut. He was wearing an OL Reign track suit. After the usual intros and…
